There are rumors and
craziness surrounding Katy Perry’s new single “Roar.” On one hand, she is being
accused of ripping off the song from Sara Barelleis’ “Brave.” There is also the
showdown between her single and Lady Gaga’s “Applause”….. Which one is better?
Which one is selling more copies? Blah, blah, blah!
Personally I’ve been
a fan of both, well, more of Lady Gaga than of Katy Perry. At one point, I
considered myself to be a “little monster,” to the point of standing outside a
venue to catch a glimpse of her (which I did.) But then, she got a little too weird
for me, and I didn’t care about her music all that much. I was also a fan of
Katy Perry. I remember the first performance I ever saw of her. It was back in
2008, at Warped Tour, she was still dating Travie McCoy of Gym Class Heroes,
and there were about 30 of us who knew who she was, and watched her performed…
but then she got on the "demanding-diva-cloud," and I stopped caring about her
music as well.
To be fair and
square, when both singles were released (earlier than expected since both were
leaked); I gave both of them a chance. I heard them both, and to my surprise,
“Roar” came on top, not only to my ears delight, but the success also reflected
on the numbers. In its first full week of sales, “Roar” has sold an impressive
over 557,000 copies, while Lady Gaga’s “Applause” has only sold a bit over
200,000.
And, while Katy
Perry has done her share of promotion with teaser videos, big rigs traveling
around the country, and the oh-so-cute emojis lyric video, the song has sold
itself. Lady Gaga has gone on crazy-mode! Not only did she start a feud with
Perez Hilton, she has gone on a twitter rampage, asking her fans to buy
multiple copies of the single, promising a meet-and-greet to the fan who buys
the most copies. She also posted a tweet (which has been deleted) with a link
to the video where fans can watch it over and over. This desperate antic caught
the eye of Billboard’s Bill Werde, who, on a series of tweets essentially said
that purposely inflated video views were not the way to go about it… "I
just hate to see anyone try to game the charts, be it fans or artists. It's not
in the spirit of what we do, celebrating success."
Why is Lady Gaga
doing this? If she is so certain of how musically magnificent “Applause” and
consequently the album ArtPop is, why try to inflate the sales of her song and the
views of her video? Clearly, Katy Perry is quite confident, and she is going
about her business.
And, on the Pop Diva
news… Britney Spears (The Princess Of Pop), added an encrypted message on her
website with the following: “ALL EYES ON ME.. 26 DAYS….”
Ultimately, the fans
will have the final say…. The question remains, who will come out on top? Take the poll below to cast your vote.
